OEM vs Compatible vs Remanufactured Cartridges
OEM cartridges are made by the printer brand (HP, Canon, Epson, Brother). They are the most expensive but the most consistent, and they never void your warranty.
Compatible cartridges are new, third-party clones. They typically cost 50–80% less and work well in older, chip-friendly printers. Quality varies by seller, and some new printers block non-OEM chips with firmware.
Remanufactured cartridges are recycled OEM shells refilled and re-chipped. They are the greenest option and cheaper than OEM, but yield and reliability depend on the refurbisher.
A printer maker cannot legally void your whole warranty just for using third-party ink, but they can decline to cover damage proven to be caused by a specific cartridge. For critical work, keep one OEM cartridge as backup.
FAQ
Will compatible ink damage my printer?
Quality compatibles are safe for most printers. The main risk is a poorly made cartridge leaking or a firmware update blocking its chip.
Do compatibles void the warranty?
No — not automatically. The maker would have to prove the cartridge caused a specific fault to deny that repair.
